Black Henna Tattoo Trouble: Spring Breakers Beware

Tattoo

Black Henna May Cause Mild To Serious Allergic Reactions and Injuries To Skin

BROWARD Spring breakers are flocking to Broward beaches and the Broward County Health Department wants everyone to stay healthy and safe. That’s what it is issuing an advisory on black henna tattoos.

Black henna tattoos are chemically treated. They are very popular with young children, teens and visitors who want to enjoy a “temporary” tattoo.

Black henna, a coloring made from a plant and approved only for use as a hair dye, may cause mild to serious allergic reactions and injuries to the skin.

Henna typically produces a brown orange-tint; other ingredients must be added to produce other colors, such as those marketed as black henna.

This so-called black henna may contain the ingredient p-phenylenediamine (PPD), which creates a darker tattoo. PPD is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for direct application to the skin.

Consumers are cautioned to be aware of the risks associated with henna tattoos in general, and black henna tattoos in particular.

For more information or to report any adverse reactions to black henna, call the FDA’s Florida district office at 305-526 2800, extension 916 or FDA Consumer Affairs at 866-337-6272.

Occasions to put mehendi

We  Indians don’t wait for any occasion to put mehendi but still ther are some moments when we consider it compulsory.

Some of the occasions are:

 *  Mehandi is considered amongst the most auspicious jewelleries of a married woman. It is generally used in most Hindu festivals.

 *  Mehandi is also applied during the various fasts observed by married women, like Karva chaut, suhag dashmi, etc.

 # It is believed widely that a large Mehandi dot in the middle of the hand, with four smaller ones at the sides denotes the presence of gods Ganesha and Lakshmi.

 # ‘Name game’ is the other occasion for Mehandi to         wear. The wedding night is sometimes not allowed to commence until the groom has fond its name in the mehendi pattern in the groom’s hand.

Views on putting of mehendi

Everybody puts mehendi for different purpose like:

#Some uses mehendi because of its cooling healing effect in a hot weather conditions.

#We in India, consider it as  a way for a bride and groom to get to know one another before an agreed marriage.

#A variety of traditions underlie the use of Mehandi, including wedding games and legends.

 # In the mehendi which is put in the bride’s hand the groom’s name is usually written somewhere within the Mehandi and if he cannot find his name within the complicated design, the bride is said to have the command in the marriage.

#If the colour of mehendi is dark  in the brdide’s hand it is considered that her hubby loves her a lot.

#If the colour of mehendi in both the bride and groom’s hand is dark it is said that they will have a strong bonding.

Mehendi and its past and present styles

To begin with there are around 8 types of different mehendi applications i.e. the traditional in which flowers, vines, leaves, peacocks, heart etc. are incorporated. Another kind of mehendi application, which has become very popular in the past few years, is Arabic traditional designs. This mehendi application is done with chemicals and usually in two colours i.e. black and brown.Earlier mehendi could be applied only in one colour – saffron. now more than two to three shades can be created in shaded Arabic graphic mehendi. Two kinds of henna applications known exclusively to Indians are sindhi and Marwari mehendi. ‘In Sindhi style mehendi big, elaborate and uniform patterns are used like only flowers or a big peacock starting from the palm and his tall and feathers spreading till the wrist. In Marwari style mehendi , cheeran, chunari, jaali etc  is used to provide different shades.

Mehndi & India

Mehndi reached India with the Arab invaders and became popular in northern states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Gujarat. But then, its use was purely utilitarian as the paste is supposed to keep the hands and feet cool. Only later, women began experimenting with different patterns and an art was born.

You can find African, Arabic and Middle Eastern influences in mehndi patterns.

Indian mehndi styles are also distinctive for their intricate filigree-like work, which can completely cover the hands and wrists, often going right up to the elbow. On the legs it adorns the feet, the ankles and sometimes reaches up to the knees.

In Arabia, henna enjoyed religious sanction and even today, Muslims believe that its application is sunnah (a meritorious act). This explains why conservative Muslim women wear mehndi on their hands, feet and hair right through the year.

What, however, escapes that people is that mehndi is not Indian in origin, but draws upon a tradition that was adopted them north Africa. Almost 5000 years ago, the Egyptians discovered that paste from the henna plant had preservative properties and hence, was applied to the hands and toes of dead Pharaohs as part of the mummification ritual.

Decoration of hands and feet with mehandi, heena, symbolic of good luck in married life, is a notable feature of the folk aesthetics in Rajasthan

A sticky paste is made by mixing a little water with the aid of a match-stick. A fantasy of delightful patterns are thus created, which when dried, leave rich red designs printed on the skin. Although there is a large variety of patterns, the one called chowk is amongst the most popular with the womenfolk. Literally meaning a courtyard, there are various forms of this pattern, a different one for each different occasion.

Thus, there is a specific design of chowk for the Gangaur, another for the Teej, and yet another for Holi and other festivals. Amongst other favorites are chopper, representation of a game which is played by throwing dice and is symbolic of conjugal love; pankhi or beejani meaning a hand-fan, a typical design for the summers; and, lahriya meaning a wave or a ripple, the most popular pattern in the rainy season.
