Mehndi reached India with the Arab invaders and became popular in northern states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Gujarat. But then, its use was purely utilitarian as the paste is supposed to keep the hands and feet cool. Only later, women began experimenting with different patterns and an art was born.
“Staining the nails, skin and hair with henna is the favorite way of enhancing beauty amongst women in the Middle East. It is used as both a hair treatment as well as a dye to make decorative designs on the skin. Henna cosmetics are made from the Egyptian evergreen plant, Lawsonia inermis, whose shoots and leaves yield an extract which is mixed with catechu, an astringent substance obtained from various trees and shrubs. Arabians crush dried berries from this plant to obtain a red powder.

Apply the area with Tiger Balm or Vaseline before bathing or swimming to help protect your design.

Better stay away from this dangerous substance!!!!
Black mehndi or black henna is grown ONLY for the purpose of dying hair and will leave a grey ashe colored stain on your skin. It contains harmful PPDs (that are banned from many areas around the world, but still available) and may cause respiratory failure and other medical problems. I beg you not to use this, because I have seen the effects of its evil wrath. Some of my friends were getting ready for a party and decided to try this crazy substance. It LITERALLY ate away at their skin. It was disgusting. So better dont use black heena. Also note that mehndi and black mehndi are two entirely different things. One of them can be dangerous if you are allergic to it (black henna) and the other is safe and health promoting (henna). When I say health promoting. It is known to be good for your hair and skin.

Absolutely not! Even traditionally, men used henna in many ceremonies. Today, many men choose to get tribal or celtic-simpired designs in henna on their fore-arms or wrists. These designs are bold and make a very stunning statement.

The Mehndi (henna) ceremony is held at the home of the bride-to-be on the eve of the wedding ceremony or a couple of days before it. The female relatives of the girl anoint her with turmeric paste to bring out the glow in her complexion. A relative or a mehndiwali (henna artist) applies mehndi on the hands and feet of the bride-to-be. The mehndiwali usually uses a mehndi cone to draw thin, artistic patterns on the hands and feet of the blushing bride-to-be. The mehndi is washed off after a few hours or kept overnight for a dark hue. The event has a festive feel to it with the women singing traditional songs. The bride-to-be wears sober clothes. According to custom, she must not step out of the house for the next few days until her marriage. Sometimes, the girl’s cousins apply a dot of mehndi on the palm of the groom-to-be by his relatives or, in some cases
