Mehndi / Henna from Sojat, Rajasthan for Aishwarya-Abhishek Wedding

Aishwarya-Abhishek Mehndi

Jaipur: Those of us who don’t know where Sojat is, it’s time to refresh their general knowledge. This is the place in Rajasthan from where Aishwarya Rai got henna for her mehndi (henna) ceremony when she weds Abhishek Bachchan. Over 15 kg of local henna travelled to wherever (the trader refuses to disclose where) the ceremony takes place. The henna packets would be sent five days prior to the wedding day.

The Bachchan family contacted a mehndi agent in Mumbai who in turn has placed orders with two of the leading henna traders of Sojat,’ sources told IANS here Friday.

These traders had prepared a special type of mehndi for model andactress Liz Hurley’s wedding to NRI businessman Arun Nayar recently.

‘We have received orders from an agent in Mumbai for the Bachchan wedding and we are preparing special packets for them. We will send these packets to wherever they decide to get married,’ said Nitesh Agarwal, a Sojat-based mehndi trader.

Sojat and its surrounding areas in the Pali district of the state boast of the most intensive henna cultivation in India. Up to 90 percent of Rajasthan’s commercial henna production is in this area.

Over 100 henna processing units are in operation in Sojat.

For this reason only, the henna of Rajasthan, India is very much in demand for the bridal mehndi also. In Rajasthan, Mehendi is put up on almost each and every occasion, in a different design, as it is considered very auspicious. One of the most popular designs in Rajasthan is the one called chowk. Literally meaning a courtyard, it is put up in various forms, each form being suitable for a different occasion. One design is applied at the time of the Gangaur fair, another at the time of Teej, yet another for Holi and so on. Other popular designs are chopper (game of dice, symbolic of marital love), lahriya (waves), pankhi or beejani (meaning fan), etc.

Henna is a symbol of love

henna / mehendiClothes, makeup and jewelry are a few ways to create a certain image. Tattooing is another. The tradition of henna painting is not as simple as drawing on the skin. What one writes is a reflection of her self; in India and Islam, that reflection defines and accentuates a woman’s sexuality, be it her powers of creation, or her beauty and desirability.

Rangoli

rangoli.jpgRangoli is wall art as well as floor art.  The term RANGOLI is derived from ‘Rang’(colour)+ avalli(coloured creepers) or ‘Rang’ + ‘aavalli’ (row of colours). Rangoli is Maharashtrain in origin although today it is practiced everywhere.

The motifs in Rangoli are usually taken from Nature – peacocks, swans, mango, flowers, creepers, etc. The colours traditionally were derived from natural dyes – from barks of trees, leaves, indigo, etc. However, today, synthetic dyes are used in a range of bright colours. The materials used for Rangoli take on either a flat appearance, when coloured powder such as rice, chilly, turmeric, etc is used or a 3-D effect when cereals, pulses either in their natural colouring or tinted with natural dyes are used. Some artists use the 3-D effect for borders alone while others create beautiful designs using grains and beads entirely.

Originally Rangoli was done in small patterns – 2 ‘ by 2′ but now entire floor areas of rooms and Hotel foyers are covered in intricate detailed designs. Traditionally, such floor decorations were done only on auspicious occasions or festivals. But today, any occasion is good enough – weddings, birthday parties, opening ceremonies, etc.

In the deep South and South West of India is Kerala – where flowers are used to create floor art.

Rangoli is a traditional Indian art used as a medium of decoration for the home that also has a religious significance. It enhances the beauty of the surroundings and spreads joy and happiness all around. The material used is powder in different colours. The designs range from simple to very complex, and can take hours to complete.
